2015 WIA AGM
Weekend Of Activities - Canberra

May 8th, 9th and 10th 2015

The WIA is pleased to announce details for the WIA 2015 AGM weekend being held in Canberra. Members who register for the event will be able to participate in a range of memorable activities. The themes for this year's event are “Celebrating 10 years of the Foundation Licence” and “Amateur Radio to the future”.

Friday Evening 8th May
King O'Malleys Hotel

For those arriving in Canberra on Friday evening an informal dinner and get together is being held at King O'Malleys Hotel which is located at 131 City Walk Canberra. Hotel management have offered the WIA use of their Guinness Room also known as the Arcade for the WIA get together. The room is away from the central busy areas of the hotel ideal for sit down functions and larger groups. You will be able to purchase the evening meal and drinks of your choice. King O'Malleys offers great food and wide range of refreshments both on tap and in bottles. Link


Saturday 9th May
Hellenic Club City

The Canberra City Hellenic Club will be the venue for Saturday activities. Centrally located in the Canberra CBD it is within easy access of a wide range of hotel accommodation and parking nearby. You can register below for lunch, morning and afternoon tea for just $21 per head. Lunch will be a choice of tortilla wraps, a pannini roll or sandwiches. Please note that there are two Hellenic Clubs in Canberra, and we are at the Hellenic Club in the City not the one at Woden. Link

The WIA AGM and Open Forum

On Saturday morning the 9th May 2015, the Wireless Institute of Australia will conduct its national Annual General Meeting of members. This year’s AGM will be held in the Poseidon Room at the Hellenic Club City. The AGM will commence at 9:00am and will be followed by the presentation of awards, after which the Open Forum will commence with reports presented on all WIA activities over the year and the opportunity to raise any issue desired. Morning tea and coffee will be served at 10:30am, please remember to use the registration form below to order your lunch and morning and afternoon tea and coffee

"Celebrating 10 years of the Foundation Licence"

The Saturday afternoon program will commence straight after lunch and it will be a celebration of 10 years of the Foundation Licence with a number of special guest speakers.

The afternoon programme includes ..

• The WIA role in the assessment system - Mal Brooks and Dianne Ashton
• ACMA devolvement and audit structures for delegation of assessment

• World wide flora and Fauna - Paul VK5PAS
• Special and remote assessments - Eric VK2VE
• EMR and training requirements - Roger VK2ZRH
• Upgrading licencees from foundation to advanced - Gail VK4ION

Saturday 9th May
Alternative Program Tour For Partners

The weekend event includes a Saturday program of relaxing activities for partners. The tour is being provided by "Canberra Day Tours" a professional tour company who also provided our partners tour for the Centenary weekend in Canberra. The tour will be non exclusive (i.e. meaning there may be others on the bus). The tour will feature a running commentary about Canberra during travel. The tour bus will take you to the National Library then Questacon, then the National Gallery, Parliament House and lastly to the National Museum.  At each of these locations you will leave the tour bus to tour the facility, the bus will then return to take you to your next destination.  Lunch will be of your choice and may be purchased from one of the many food outlets at the various venues. The bus tour will commence at 9:30 at bus stop 11 which is to the right of the Novotel and opposite the Hellenic Club, and the tour bus will return you to that same bus stop at 4:30pm in the afternoon.

WIA Annual Dinner

On Saturday evening the WIA will host its Annual Dinner at the Hellenic Club. The evening will be a great social occasion as well as providing an opportunity to hear from a guest speaker. We are hoping t to have a guest speaker join us from the ACMA. A roast meal will be provided at $35 per head. Wine, beer and soft drink will be available for purchase from the bar.


Sunday 10th May
Tour Canberra

Sunday will provide an opportunity for all attending the weekend to visit the many local Canberra attractions such as the War Memorial and to celebrate the ANZAC centenary. The WIA will be providing those registering with tourist infomation booklets and timetables in particular for ANZAC related events these are being provided by the Canberra Tourist Information Bureaux.

For those not travelling back to their home QTH on Sunday, the Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club CRARC would like to invite you to an evening get together on Sunday evening at the City Labor Club Petrie Plaza, Canberra.

Please ensure that you use the online registration form at the bottom of this webpage to register your attendance for the weekend activities. You are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Please note, if you have young children under the age of 12 who you plan to bring to the weekend and these children are not involved in amateur radio, then please do not record them using the online form, instead simply phone the WIA office and speak with Mal or Dianne. For seating and catering purposes we do need to know how many will be coming.


Travelling To Canberra

By car Canberra is 288km south of Sydney, 647km north of Melbourne, 1204km east of Adelaide and 1268km south of Brisbane. Take M5 motorway connecting with the Hume Highway (Route 31); turn off to Canberra on Federal Highway beyond Goulburn.

By air Canberra has a small domestic airport about 15mins drive from the City centre. Both Qantas (131313) and Virgin Blue (13 6789) fly there several times a day; the trip from Sydney takes 30-40mins. By train CountryLink's very handy Xplorer train service (13 2232) runs from Central Station to Canberra and back again three times a day. The trip takes just over 4hrs.
