About Paul Hoffmann

Born in Adelaide, I grew up in the North Western suburb of Croydon Park. I developed an interest in amateur radio as I walked past a kind amateur's house on the way to primary school. At the age of 8 it was not unusual for me to talk to the United States on 20m. With an interest in electronics developing it seemed a logical step to go into Telstra as a technician in training. I worked on the Telecommunications side for 10 years before moving over to the IT side where I worked on mainframe systems, desktops and then LANs. I have been consulting to various government departments since 1993.

Radio Activities

Most of my spare time is divided between helping out with the State Advisory Committee and working as a training coordinator for the Scout Radio Activities Group. I derive a great deal of pleasure from running the courses and seeing new amateurs gaining their licenses. I obtained the callsign VK5XPH in 1997, then VK5KPH and with a bit of a morse struggle got my current callsign VK5PH.

I enjoy participating in field days and really like going to radio sales and conventions. I am also trying to improve my CW when I get a chance.

I am also a member of the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society, QRP club and WICEN.

Hobbies

I enjoy walking and bike riding especially when I can get out on forest trails and back roads. Camping is also a favourite pastime and this works in well with the provision of radio communications for the Scouts.

Family

I am married to a very patient and supportive wife Suzy VK5FSUE, who I must admit gives me a fairly free run with all of the radio events that I attend.
