Introduction

An informal group generally known as WICEN operated in southern Tasmania for several years. A core group supplied much of the equipment and managed the logistics to provide a public service to various event organisers and, on occasions, to the Tasmania Fire Service. The group enabled the participation in these activities of the wider Amateur Radio community and other interested radio users. Late in 2007 it was decided to formalise arrangements and WICEN Tasmania (South) was incorporated and affiliated with the WIA.

Its purpose is to:

a) Establish and maintain a core group with a voluntary public service and emergency radio communications capability of the highest possible standard, and to

b) Work with the broader radio interested community (not exclusively Amateur Radio) to extend that capability.

The group's focus is on the practical application of radio communications to provide a voluntary public service at a close to professional level.

The majority of members are also members of the WIA and the Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania Inc.

Meetings

Our musters are held on an approximately six weekly basis, normally on Sunday afternoon and usually at the QTH of a member or appended to an activity. They are advertised on the Diary page of the WICEN web site (see above). Visitors are always welcome.

Club Activities & Events

We try to hold an event of some kind, on average, once each month. Horse endurance rides and major motor sport events make up the core of the program.

A number of members regularly participate in the various contests sponsored by the Wireless Institute of Australia and kindred international organisations. On a club basis, the International Lighthouse & Lightship weekend is one of the long standing favourites. Several Scout and Guide groups are usually catered for each JOTA weekend.

Members have specialist interests which include repeaters, Coast Radio and APRS. Field portable operation is the primary focus and members are involved in constructing and improving equipment.

Currently, the majority of members live in the Channel region, south of Hobart. VK7RHT is maintained on behalf of REAST and WICEN members provide VK7RBI which extends the primary SE Tasmania repeater coverage to Cockle Creek, which is as far south as you can drive in Australia! APRS digipeaters in the region are also also supplied and maintained by WICEN members.

Members contribute towards providing extended radio communications for amateurs, particularly those located in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon Valley.
