Date : 02 / 05 / 2005
Author : Phil Wait - VK2DKN

The WIA wrote to the ACA in December 2004 raising the WIA's concerns with current and future BPL trials in Australia, and recommending a number of actions.

The ACA, in its response in January advised that it would be consulting with stakeholders, and of its plans for a BPL discussion paper for public and stakeholder comment.

The ACA has now released the discussion paper entitled "The Management of Interference from Broadband over Power Line Applications". The paper's purpose is to assist individuals and organisations to prepare submissions to the ACA on interference management of Broadband over power line (BPL) applications. Submissions are required by 24 June 2005.

The discussion paper is an objective, informative and interesting overview of the current situation, including MF/HF spectrum usage, legislative, regulatory, and overseas perspectives. All amateurs interested in the future of Amateur Radio in competition with other potential users of radio spectrum should read the paper and follow the issue.

The paper canvasses options for regulation of BPL to manage the interfereence risk that has been demonstrated by deployments of In-house and Access BPL technologies.

The discussion paper can be downloaded from the ACA BPL Portal, there is a prominent link to the portal on the right hand side of the ACA home page at www.aca.gov.au, look for the words "Broadband over Powerlines".
