Date : 21 / 03 / 2011
Author : Peter Wilmott - VK3TQ

The Macedon Ranges Amateur Radio Club ran its first foundation course over two weekends in February bringing new folk to the amateur bands and bolstering their membership. The course facilitator was Peter Willmott VK3TQ who was assisted by Joe Aprile VK3GFA and Bob Robinson VK3SX. The course run over two weekends, Peter said while that many courses run over one weekend the club decided to have the course over two weekends so students could take the time and learn, it also gave a lot of one on one time with students and gave us time to explore in greater detail topics like operating ethics, ACMA and WIA, basically how everything fits.

The club is excited that we now have eight new foundation licensee's and one standard licensee New licensee Howard Burvill VK3FHWB, is also on the committee. Howard's son Davin VK3FDBA, gained his licence last year with the scouting movement.

Interestedly the club had involvement from Rotary International. Three of the class participants were from Rotary's Disaster Aid Australia. These three gentlemen, all from Woodend, came along to learn about radio as they are looking at soon being posted possibly to Pakistan or the Sudan in Rotary Disaster aid efforts MRARC would like to thank WIA Assessor Mike Adams VK3KMA from Melbourne Electronics and Radio Club (MERC) for assisting us in such a big assessment day.

MRARC now has applications for two WIA Assessors and hopes to run a standard upgrade course later on in the year, those interested may contact the club website to register.
