WIA Submits Vision for a Stronger, More Accessible Amateur Service
The Wireless Institute of Australia has formally submitted its response to the Australian Communications and Media Authority consultation on the Five-Year Spectrum Outlook 2026–31 and 2026–27 Work Program, outlining a clear and practical roadmap to strengthen the future of amateur radio in Australia.
The submission highlights the critical role amateur radio plays in Australia’s STEM ecosystem, innovation capability, and emergency communications resilience. However, it also identifies key challenges currently facing the service, including declining assessment outcomes, gaps in licensing documentation, inequities in callsign arrangements, and broader concerns around communication and service delivery. These issues are impacting participation, confidence, and operational effectiveness across the amateur community.
Importantly, the WIA’s response is not just a critique—it is a forward-looking plan for reform. Key proposals include the development of a staged EMR competence framework to enable safe access to increased power, modernisation of repeater and beacon regulation, and targeted improvements to spectrum access to support experimentation and emerging technologies. The submission also reinforces the WIA’s commitment to working collaboratively with the ACMA, offering technical expertise, community insight, and proven capability to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions.
Through structured collaboration, clear timelines, and a shared commitment to improving outcomes, the WIA believes there is a strong opportunity to enhance regulatory settings, support innovation, and ensure the long-term sustainability and public value of the amateur service in Australia.
