New Fourth Edition of Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur Released

Date : 29 / 07 / 2026
Author : IARU

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 has officially released the Fourth Edition of Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur, updating one of the most respected reference documents in amateur radio. Replacing the previous Third Edition (June 2010), this comprehensive revision reflects the significant changes that have occurred across the hobby over the past 15 years, incorporating modern operating practices, digital technologies and the latest recommendations for courteous and effective on-air behaviour.

Developed through extensive consultation and careful editorial review, the new edition reinforces the principles that have long underpinned amateur radio worldwide: respect for fellow operators, efficient spectrum use, technical excellence and a commitment to self-regulation. Whether operating voice, CW, digital modes, satellites, contesting, DX, emergency communications or experimenting with the latest technologies, the guide provides practical advice that is just as relevant to newly licensed amateurs as it is to experienced operators. It remains the global benchmark for ethical operating and good amateur practice.

The editorial team has acknowledged the many individuals who contributed comments and suggestions throughout the revision process, with every submission carefully considered before publication. Their dedication and attention to detail have helped ensure this latest edition continues the document's long-standing reputation as the definitive guide to amateur radio operating standards.

The Wireless Institute of Australia encourages every Australian amateur to download and read this important publication. Good operating practice not only makes our bands more enjoyable, it also demonstrates to regulators and the wider community that amateur radio continues to be a technically skilled, courteous and self-governing service.

The Fourth Edition is available in English from the IARU Region 1 website and is also expected to be mirrored by a growing number of national amateur radio societies around the world.
