As promised in the last issue, this time we have two 50-year anniversaries to commemorate.
First up is the amateur satellite AO-7, which is the oldest man-made satellite still working!
It was launched on the 15th of November 1974!
It is older – I repeat, older – than the two Voyager spacecraft, both of which were launched in 1977.
The crux of the AO-7 story is that the satellite was conceived, developed, and constructed in home workshops and basements by radio hams across Australia, Canada, Germany, and America.
AO-7 carried a range of radio science and space engineering innovations that were later adopted widely by other spacecraft built by aerospace companies and organisations.
AO-7 – 50 years and still doing its thing.

The second 50th anniversary feature this issue is about Cyclone Tracy that devastated Darwin at Christmas 1974.
In a series of five articles over 16 pages, our writers detail the role amateur radio played in the immediate recovery following the cyclone’s passing, along with experiences of “riding it out”, and of the aftermath.
The Cyclone Tracy feature is vividly illustrated, from the front cover to throughout the articles, including scenes of violent destruction. Reader discretion is advised.
On technical matters, Lou Destefano VK3AQZ describes a smart, Arduino-controlled RF signal generator, while Jim Sosnin VK3JST has an update on his Track-and-hold VFO for older rigs.
