More Than Radios: How WICEN NSW Helped Support a Medical Breakthrough

When people think about amateur radio emergency communications, they often picture volunteers responding to bushfires, floods, storms or other emergencies. While those roles remain an important part of WICEN's mission, sometimes the value of volunteer communications is measured not in days or weeks, but over decades.

For many years, WICEN NSW volunteers have provided safety communications for the annual Hawkesbury Canoe Classic, a gruelling overnight paddle on the Hawkesbury River organised by the Arrow Foundation. The event raises vital funds to support bone marrow and stem cell transplant research, with WICEN volunteers helping ensure the safety and coordination of competitors and event officials along the course.

That long-term commitment has now become part of an extraordinary success story. Researchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute recently announced a major scientific breakthrough after more than 25 years of research, developing a method to create pluripotent blood stem cells capable of becoming any type of blood cell in the human body. The research was supported in part by funding from the Arrow Foundation, linking the efforts of thousands of volunteers and supporters, including the dedicated communications teams from WICEN NSW.

It is a powerful reminder that amateur radio volunteers often contribute to community outcomes far beyond the microphone. By providing reliable communications year after year, WICEN NSW has helped enable an event that has funded world-class medical research with the potential to transform the treatment of blood diseases and save countless lives.

The next Hawkesbury Canoe Classic will be held on 24-25 October 2026, with WICEN NSW once again providing safety communications for the event.
