Have you ever wanted to get on air, learn how radio communications work, or explore electronics, antennas, SDR, digital modes, satellites, emergency communications or HF and VHF radio? The Ipswich & District Radio Club is now taking expressions of interest for its next Foundation Amateur Radio Licence Course, commencing on Wednesday 5 August 2026. The free eight-week course is open to everyone, with no club membership required, and provides a friendly, hands-on introduction to amateur radio, culminating in a Foundation Licence assessment on Saturday 26 September 2026.
The course combines classroom learning with practical operating experience, covering radio regulations, operating procedures, basic electronics, propagation, antennas, safety and interference management. Students also gain valuable experience using real HF and VHF/UHF amateur radio stations, learning how to safely set up equipment, make contacts and operate confidently on air. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure plenty of individual support, and the club can also assist candidates with accessibility requirements and flexible assessment arrangements where needed.
Training is provided free of charge, with students only needing a copy of the WIA Foundation Licence Manual. After successfully completing the assessment, ACMA licensing and callsign fees apply separately. If you've been looking for an enjoyable and practical technical hobby, now is the perfect time to get involved. To register your interest, contact Training Officer Greg VK4GJW at VK4GJW@gmail.com or visit the Ipswich & District Radio Club Foundation Course page for further information.
