GB2CG Puts the Commonwealth Games on the Amateur Radio Airwaves

Date : 28 / 07 / 2026
Author : SDARS (GM6NX)

The Commonwealth Games sees amateur radio operators joining the celebrations with the activation of the special event station GB2CG.

Operating from the Stirling and District Amateur Radio Society (GM6NX) in Scotland, GB2CG commenced transmissions on Sunday 19 July and will be active on an ad hoc basis through until 13 August, depending on the availability of club key holders and volunteer operators. The station provides an excellent opportunity for amateurs around the world to add a unique Commonwealth Games special event station to their logs while celebrating one of the world's premier multi-sport events.

The station is well equipped with four HF operating positions capable of running up to 1 kW into directional Yagi antennas, supporting SSB, CW and FT8 operation. A dedicated 6-metre station is also available, providing additional opportunities as band conditions permit. In keeping with the welcoming spirit of amateur radio, guest operators and non-members are invited to visit the club and operate the station, making GB2CG a true community effort.

Special event stations such as GB2CG highlight amateur radio's ability to connect people across borders while commemorating significant national and international occasions. If you hear GB2CG on the bands over the coming weeks, be sure to give them a call and help celebrate both the Commonwealth Games and the worldwide amateur radio community.
