WIA Meets Communications Minister and discusses Amateur Radio Representation and International Engagement

Wireless Institute of Australia Vice-President Peter Schrader VK4EA has met with the Minister for Communications and Minister for Sport, the Hon Anika Wells MP, for a discussion about the WIA, its role representing Australian radio amateurs and the importance of maintaining strong relationships with government, regulators and international amateur radio organisations. Minister Wells has held the Communications portfolio since May 2025 and is also the Federal Member for Lilley in Queensland.

Peter outlined the WIA's role as Australia's national representative body for participants in the Amateur Service, while emphasising that the organisation is overwhelmingly powered by volunteers who contribute their professional expertise and personal time to amateur radio. The discussion also covered the WIA's relationship with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Peter highlighted the positive and constructive working relationship that has developed with ACMA personnel and the importance of continuing that cooperative approach when addressing regulatory, licensing and spectrum matters.

International representation was another important part of the discussion. Peter explained the WIA's participation in the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and its involvement in the broader ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) process. Minister Wells was already familiar with the WRC framework and was particularly interested in the fact that amateur radio representatives travel to Geneva, Switzerland, to participate in this international spectrum work. Decisions and preparatory work within the ITU and WRC processes can ultimately affect spectrum allocations and operating conditions for radio services around the world, making continued amateur representation important.

The meeting also covered the WIA's cooperation with fellow national amateur radio organisations internationally, including the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters (NZART), American Radio Relay League (ARRL), Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) and Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL). These relationships allow national societies to share technical knowledge and coordinate on regulatory and spectrum issues that rarely respect national borders. The meeting provided another valuable opportunity to ensure that the Amateur Service remains visible to government and that the WIA continues building constructive relationships at the national and international levels.
