Tasmania Does It Again: VK7 Wins the 2026 Remembrance Day Contest

The results are in for the 2026 WIA Remembrance Day Contest, and congratulations go to VK7 Tasmania, winner of the interstate competition for an extraordinary eleventh consecutive year. Tasmania recorded a combined state raw score of 7,955 points, ahead of Victoria on 4,942 points. The result was backed by particularly strong participation, with 38.82% of the 85 unique VK7 participants submitting a log.

This year's RD Contest attracted 190 submitted logs, recording more than 21,000 contacts across MF, HF, VHF, UHF and microwave bands. The report records 846 unique participants overall. The contest remains one of Australian amateur radio's most significant annual events, combining friendly competition with its original purpose of remembering Australian radio amateurs who lost their lives during the Second World War. The perpetual interstate trophy has been part of that tradition since the contest was established following the first post-war WIA Federal Convention in 1946.

2026 Category Winners

Congratulations to the first-place stations in each of the principal categories: Single Operator Phone, VK7OO with 790 points; Single Operator CW, VK2IG with 236; Single Operator Mixed, VK4M operated by VK4SN with 867; QRP Phone, VK3IRE with 125; QRP CW, VK3ACU with 180; QRP Mixed, VK7WW with 243; Multi-Single, VK4BA with 434; and Multi-Multi, VL4R, operated by VK4DI, VK4ZD and VK4AJG, with 973 points. The Lowballers, comprising VJ2T, VK5T and VK4M, won the Teams category with 1,645 points.

There was also an encouraging response to the newly introduced Youth Award for operators aged 25 and under, with nine youth entrants. Izaac VK4IKZ took first place in Youth Single Operator Phone with 393 points, Harry VK2UNL was the leading Youth QRP Phone station with 102 points, while VK2OCC, representing young people from the 237th Army Cadet Unit in the Southern Highlands, took the Youth Multi-Operator award. The report also recognises VK7BLW as the top Single Operator Phone Rookie and VK3IRE as the top QRP Phone Rookie.

The statistics provide an interesting picture of where the activity occurred. 40 metres dominated with 11,605 contacts, followed by 80 metres with 4,623. But this certainly wasn't an HF-only affair: 1,070 contacts were recorded on 2 metres, 896 on 70 centimetres, 494 on 23 centimetres and another 177 above 3.4 GHz. Phone remained dominant, with the report recording an overall Phone-to-CW ratio of 14:1.

Congratulations to every operator and team that participated, and particularly to VK7 for making it ten consecutive interstate victories. More importantly, thank you to everyone who took part in the opening commemoration, got on air, submitted a log and helped continue a contest tradition now stretching back eight decades.
