WIA Celebrates 100 Years of the Japan Amateur Radio League

The Wireless Institute of Australia has joined amateur radio organisations from around the world in congratulating the Japan Amateur Radio League on its 100th anniversary, recognising a century of service to amateur radio in Japan and internationally.
WIA Directors Peter Clee VK8ZZ and Lee Moyle VK3GK recently represented the WIA at the JARL Ham Fair 2026 in Tokyo. Held on 29 and 30 August at Ariake GYM-EX, this year's Ham Fair was particularly significant as part of JARL's centenary celebrations. JARL reports an impressive 42,000 attendances across the two days, with 31,000 on Saturday and 11,000 on Sunday.
The Japan Amateur Radio League was founded on 12 June 1926 by 37 radio amateurs, who announced the formation of the organisation to amateurs around the world. A century later, JARL remains one of the major national amateur radio organisations in the IARU community. Japan will reach another significant milestone in 2027, marking 100 years since the licensing of JXAX, regarded as the country's first amateur radio station.
WIA Presents Centenary Plaque to JARL
A special JARL 100th Anniversary Celebration Dinner was attended by representatives from around 30 amateur radio associations and societies from across the world. During the celebration, Peter VK8ZZ and Lee VK3GK, representing the WIA, presented a special recognition plaque to JARL President Koji Morita JA5SUD, congratulating JARL on reaching its centenary and recognising its contribution to amateur radio. JARL's centenary site confirms Koji Morita JA5SUD as its President.
The presentation also recognised the long relationship between national amateur radio societies. Organisations such as the WIA and JARL play an important role beyond their own borders through participation in the international amateur radio community, particularly through the International Amateur Radio Union, spectrum advocacy and cooperation between national societies.
For Australian amateurs, relationships with organisations such as JARL are particularly important. Australia and Japan are both part of IARU Region 3, covering the Asia-Pacific region, where national societies work together on spectrum, band planning, regulatory and broader amateur radio issues.
The WIA congratulates President Koji Morita JA5SUD, the JARL Board, its members and Japan's amateur radio community on this remarkable milestone. One hundred years is quite an achievement for any organisation, particularly one devoted to a technology whose demise has been confidently predicted at regular intervals for most of that century.
Congratulations JARL on 100 years, and here's to the next century of amateur radio in Japan.
