Coming Up in Amateur Radio Magazine: Measure Your EMR, Build a Rig and Celebrate Six Metres

Date : 06 / 10 / 2026
Author : WIA

The next edition of the WIA's Amateur Radio magazine is shaping up as another issue firmly aimed at radio amateurs who enjoy understanding, measuring and building things for themselves.

The cover feature tackles something every amateur station needs to consider: electromagnetic radiation compliance, or EMR. Author and home constructor Craig Harrison VK2ACH, who works in the test and measurement field, presents a pair of simple DIY EMR probes, sensors or, as the cover rather nicely calls them, "wands". They allow amateurs to actually measure the electromagnetic field around their station and use those measurements to help determine whether their installation complies with the relevant requirements.

That offers an attractive alternative to relying solely on mathematical modelling, assumptions about antennas and operating conditions, or the less scientifically rigorous technique of hoping everything will probably be fine. The project brings EMR assessment firmly into the amateur tradition: build something, measure it and find out what's really happening.

Elsewhere in the issue, six metres gets some serious attention, with a couple of dedicated 6-metre operators exploring their enthusiasm for the "Magic Band". Anyone who has spent time on 50 MHz knows why the word magic is appropriate. One moment there's nothing, the next there are signals from somewhere improbable, and shortly afterwards they're gone again while you stare accusingly at a perfectly functional radio.

Home construction continues with Lou Destefano VK3AQZ completing his Foundation-class 80 and 40 metre transceiver project. It is another reminder that amateur radio can still be about far more than opening a box and plugging in a microphone. Building equipment, understanding how it works and then putting it on air remain at the heart of the hobby.
And, naturally, there is much more inside the next edition of AR magazine, covering amateur radio technology, construction, experimentation, operating and news from around Australia.

The WIA also welcomes Michelle Hall VK4SHE as the newest member of the AR Publications Committee. Michelle's name will formally join the committee listing on Page 3 from Issue 7. The Publications Committee is the volunteer team responsible for producing Amateur Radio and encourages WIA members to submit their own technical projects, experiments and amateur radio experiences for publication.

Amateur Radio is published six times a year by the Wireless Institute of Australia, in print and digital formats. WIA members receive the magazine as a membership benefit, with the digital PDF available to registered members online.
