In just one month, radio amateurs, experimenters, educators, technologists and innovators will gather in Hobart for the Tassie Ham-E-Con Amateur Radio Conference 2026, being held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November at the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre on the University of Tasmania Sandy Bay Campus. The conference runs from 9am Saturday through to 1pm Sunday, with a program bringing together presenters from Tasmania, interstate and overseas. Humanitix
And let's make one thing particularly clear:
This is not a hamfest. This is an amateur radio conference.
There won't be rows of tables where the principal intellectual challenge is deciding whether that mysterious box of connectors is worth five dollars. Tassie Ham-E-Con is about ideas, experimentation, education, technology and the future of amateur radio.
The 2026 theme is “Hack the Ether: Education, Ingenuity, Connection”, with the conference divided into four streams: Hack the Mind, exploring education and learning futures; Hack the System, focusing on ingenuity and experimentation; Hack the Culture, looking at engagement and connection; and Hack the Future, examining leadership and purpose. Hack the Ether
“Hacking” here isn't about breaking into computers. It's about the original hacker mindset: understand how something works, pull it apart intellectually or physically, experiment with it, improve it and discover what else it can do.
That philosophy could hardly be more appropriate for amateur radio.
Whether your interests lie in SDR, antennas, satellites, weak-signal communications, digital modes, home construction, microwave, propagation, citizen science, education, club development or emerging technologies, Tassie Ham-E-Con is designed to get people thinking about what amateur radio can become, not simply reminiscing about what it once was.
As the conference organisers put it: “Hack the Ether isn't just a theme, it's a mindset: tune in, build boldly, and transmit the future.”
More Than a Day of Presentations
The conference itself is a fully catered event, with the main program running across Saturday and Sunday morning. There are also opportunities to turn it into an amateur radio weekend, including a Friday evening pre-conference BBQ, a proposed radio history tour of Hobart and post-conference SOTA and microwave activities on kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
Can't get to Tasmania? There is also a streaming registration option, so interstate and international amateurs can participate online. Current registrations include conference-only, conference plus the Friday BBQ and online streaming options.
Tassie Ham-E-Con is for the radio amateur who wants to learn something new, challenge assumptions, meet other experimenters, exchange ideas and leave with a notebook full of things they want to try.
One month to go. Come to Hobart and Hack the Ether.
