Channel 7s ‘This Day Tonight’ Runs Good-News BPL Story

Date : 07 / 11 / 2006
Author : Phil Wait - VK2DKN

Aurora Energy’s Broadband Powerline (BPL) trial was featured on Channel 7s ‘This Day Tonight’ (TDT). The story centered on the ability of Aurora’s customers to make low cost VoIP telephone calls through their BPL system, and the freedom that offers from the near monopoly of the large Telcos.

Everyone welcomes the benefits of VoIP, indeed many radio amateurs were early adopters of the VoIP telephone- but you don’t need BPL to do it. All you need is a broadband internet connection, like cable or ADSL, a VoIP service provider, and cheap telephone calls are yours.

We all know BPL is indeed a double edged sword, it has good and bad, and although its interference to emergency radio communications services was acknowledged on the program it was conveniently brushed aside with the statement “interference problems have been generally overcome”.

Well, you could have fooled us! Not only has Channel 7 ignored amateur and other radio communications users, they appear to have redefined the term “generally”.

It’s a pity Channel 7 didn’t bother to contact the WIA prior to this ‘good-news’ story being produced.

Some WIA members may wish to voice their discontent directly with Channel 7. However, remember that it’s not BPL we amateurs oppose, but rather the interference it causes to high frequency radio communications services.

If BPL interference can be fixed everyone wins. So far only the Motorola system comes close to doing just that.
