New ITU Block for the Cook Islands

Date : 14 / 04 / 2005
Author : Chris Jones - VK2ZDD

The ARRL website has reported that New Zealand has received a callsign prefix block, E5A - E5Z, from the ITU for the exclusive use of the Cook Islands. This makes the Cook Islands a "political entity" for DXCC purposes. However, the ARRL Membership Services Manager Wayne Mills, N7NG, says the impact on the DXCC List will be minimal. It is likely that Palmerston Island, which had previously counted as one of the South Cook Islands, will now be considered as part of the North Cook group, as the island is just over 350km north-west of Rarotonga. "The remainder of what has been known as the North Cooks is not sufficiently distant from Palmerston to become an additional DXCC entity," he said.

Thanks to the RSGB and ARRL
