Ken Matchett VK3TL - Silent Key

Date : 12 / 03 / 2008
Author : Michael Owen - VK3KI

It is with great sadness we advise that Ken Matchett VK3TL passed away aged 86 years on the 10th March.

Ken was best known in the amateur community as the Curator of the WIA QSL Card Collection. Under his care the collection has become one of the greatest in the world, a contemporaneous record of the history not only of amateur radio, but of radio itself.

Ken gave many hours of his time in collecting, sorting, cataloguing and filing the WIA QSL card collection of which he was so justifiably proud.

During World War II Ken was in the Signals Corp and this initiated his life-long love affair with communications. He was a member of the WIA, the Old Timers Club and the EMDRC, and was a willing guest speaker at many clubs when asked to talk about his beloved QSL collection.

Ken's other main interest in later life was track and field, and in particular, Ultra Marathon Running. This retired schoolteacher and university lecturer became interested in marathon running at age 57. Subsequently, his achievements are quite daunting and during his career he held many World and Australian Records.

His passing is a great loss to the WIA and to amateur radio.
