AX Callsigns

Date : 16 / 04 / 2009
Author : Geoff Atkinson - VK3AFA

Each year Australian Amateurs have the opportunity of using the "AX" prefix in lieu of "VK" when calling other amateurs on 3 predetermined occasions. These are Australia Day, Anzac Day and World Telecommunications Day.

Saturday 25th April is Anzac Day and a time for us to reflect on the freedom we have.

Sunday 17th May is World Telecommunication Day and all stations are invited to go on the air and celebrate amateur radio.

Also this month on Saturday the 18th April it is time to celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. Each year the IARU celebrates its anniversary. The IARU is the worldwide federation of national Amateur Radio organizations representing radio amateurs in over 158 countries. However AX callsigns should NOT be used during this event.

In 2009, the theme of the event is Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and Emergency Communication. It is timely that we remember the volunteer services of many amateurs who have recently given so freely of their time during the fires and floods that have invaded our communities.
