Rare Grid Locator Activation

Date : 02 / 09 / 2009
Author : Robert Broomhead - VK3DN

Barry Miller VK3BJM will be traveling to Mount Arden over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of October to activate grid locator PF87 on the 2m band. Mount Arden is in the southern Flinders Ranges, just over 20 km NNW of Quorn. The locator for the operating site is PF87xu; Lat 32° 8'38.04"S, Long 137°59'1.09"E.

The site is a little north of the summit, along a ridge that affords some protection from the paging device that lives on the big hill. The activation will be on Saturday, Sunday and until 1000 CST Monday. Operating on 144 MHz, with a 14 el yagi and 300+ watts. Readable signals from eastern Melbourne were heard several times during Barrys last trip. On this trip Barry will taking extra power and extra antenna gain to give people an even better chance of hearing him. Barry will be onsite for the entire weekend to maximise chances of making contacts. He informs us that he will be taking a 240 v generator, so full wick will be available for the duration.
