Introduction

The Mount Isa and District Amateur Radio Group Incorporated started out in the 1970s as the Mount Isa Bacon Board (bacon = ham - I had to ask...), a group of radio enthusiasts that met at the Mount Isa Tavern.

The group visited the Gregory Canoe race in 1979 to find CBers struggling to provde comms. They thought they could do better and assisted in 1980 and thenceforth for many years.
They also assisted with some horse endurance events and off road car rally.

We currently operate a 2m repeater VK4RMI with IRLP and Echolink connections and a 70cm Repeater VK4RIC, still in testing/build. A 2m APRS Digipeater is currently being tested and should be fully operational soon, and an APRS recieve only iGate is also in place.

We are currently looking at adding an Allstar link as well, as this has become a favourite mode for many of our members.

Meetings

Next General Meeting is at 10.00am on 14/3/2026 at the Chinaman Creek Dam Recreation Area in Cloncurry. We will have a BBQ and antenna testing session after wards, so bring those hammade antennas along and join in the fun.

Club Activities & Events

UPDATED 1/2/2026
January Repeater maintenance at the Four Mile Hill Repeater Site was completed on Saturday, 17th January at 9.30am. Thanks to VK4DAT and VK4GEO for carrying out this task.

During the repeater Maintenance we discovered a fairly decent ant infestation in the battery compartment, which has since been professionally treated thanks to assistance from Mount Isa Pest Control. Thanks to VK4POW for organising this to be completed.

Our Antenna making day was held on January 31st with 2 new interested people in attendance. We constructed a 2m Flowerpot and then scaled the design up to make a 6m Flowerpot.

Next Group outing is a Coffee Catchup at the Outback @ Isa Cafe on 14th February at 9.30am.

February Repeater Site checks will be done on 28th February at 9.30am.
